Streaming and High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP)

When attempting to utilize streaming services, such as Spotify or other video platforms like Prime Video, you may notice projectors cut out and turn black. This is an intentional copyright safeguard (HDCP) and not an equipment malfunction

Streaming services use HDCP to enforce restrictions on devices connected via HDMI, DVI, or DisplayPort to prevent copyrighted content from being recorded or intercepted unlawfully.

Streaming services that implement HDCP include, but are not limited to:

  • Netflix
  • Amazon Prime
  • Disney+
  • Hulu
  • Paid YouTube content (YouTube Movies or YouTube Red)

The Terms of Service for personal streaming accounts (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) strictly prohibit "public performances.”

  • Personal Use Only: Your personal subscription is licensed for private, in-home viewing.
  • Institutional Risk: Using a personal account to show a film to a class can technically violate these terms.

These restrictions are mandated by federal copyright law and the specific licensing terms of streaming providers. Cabrillo College does not control these regulations and is legally required to adhere to them to ensure institutional compliance. Attempting to bypass these protections can destabilize classroom A/V hardware. Support staff will not assist with or authorize the use of bypass equipment.
