Okta Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)

Okta is the Single Sign-On system used by Cabrillo to allow you to use Gmail, Self Service, and other applications, and to keep your account secure. After entering your username and password in an Okta-secured site, you must authenticate with a separate security method:

• Phone - enter a code sent to you from a text message or phone call (using either your Cabrillo desk phone or your mobile phone)
• Okta Verify - approve sign-ins from a notification sent to the Okta app on your phone
• Google Authenticator - enter a code generated from an application on your phone
• YubiKey - Plug a small USB device (obtained from Cabrillo IT) into your computer and touch the embedded sensor to authenticate
   

Account settings and additional security methods

• Cabrillo IT highly recommends adding multiple security methods (also known as authentication factors). For example, if your mobile phone is damaged or lost, you could use your desk phone or YubiKey to access your Cabrillo account. If you don’t have access to any other authentication factors, you won’t be able to sign into your account.

• You can add and change security methods, change your password, and view other account information in your Okta dashboard.

• In the upper-right corner, click on your username, then Settings in the dropdown menu.

  
  
   

• Select the Security Method you want to set up.
  

Instructions for Adding and Using Authentication Methods

Phone

1. On the Set up security methods page, click Set up phone.
2. Select SMS or Voice call.
3. From the "Country" dropdown menu, select your phone number's country.
4. Enter your phone number in the "Phone number" field. Don't include the country code, dashes, and the leading zero if your country's phone system uses it.
   • If you selected "SMS", you can only provide a mobile phone number.
   • If you selected "Voice callL and your phone number includes an extension number, enter it in the Extension field.
5. Click the Receive a code button.
6. Enter the One-time Password (OTP) that you received in the Enter Code field and click Verify. After the successful verification, you're redirected to Settings and the phone number appears in Security Methods.

Okta Verify

1. Download the Okta Verify app for your smartphone:
   • Apple App Store
   • Google Play Store
2. On the Set up security methods page, click Set up Okta Verify and authenticate if requested. You'll be shown a QR code.
3. Open the app on your phone and select Get Started > Next > Add Account.
4. For "Choose Account Type", select Organization
5. On the "Do you have a QR Code?" screen, select Yes, Ready to Scan.
6. Point your camera at the QR code displayed on the computer.
7. Follow the instructions to complete the account setup.

Google Authenticator

1. Download the Google Authenticator app for your smartphone:
   • Apple App Store
   • Google Play Store
2. On the Set up security methods page, click Set up Google Authenticator and authenticate if requested. You'll be shown a QR code.
3. Open the app on your phone and select Scan a QR code.
4. Point your camera at the QR code displayed on the computer.
5. The account will be added to the app and will begin displaying timed codes. 
6. Click next on the web browser on your computer, and enter a code from the Google Authenticator app on your phone.

Yubikey
